Development and testing of a PCM enhanced domestic refrigerator with use of miniature DC compressor for weak/off grid locations

This paper presents the development of a sustainable and affordable domestic refrigerator for rural areas where grid setting is weak or non-existent. The uses miniature refrigeration unit based on micro direct current (DC) compressor, which can adjust its speed according to photovoltaic output variation with solar radiation intensity, in order maximize cooling production. experimental investigation aims define capacity management through use phase change materials (PCMs). PCM packs fridge are charged during period high and, afterward, melting releases maintain cold temperature extra hours when low not available. design construction an finned tube heat exchanger cabinet; selection particularly, effect transfer enhancement at condenser discussed. Lab-scale tests were carried UK field out Ghana collaboration project. In lab-scale tests, it found that modification decrease transient power consumption by up 26%. contrast, field-testing results show daily be reduced only from 0.9 0.84 kWh.
